Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph'

Originally found on the Nez Perce reservation in Oregon, this dwarf pine is named for the tribe’s famous chief. In fall, ‘Chief Joseph’ morphs to a glowing yellow which it retains until spring, when it again reverts to green. A slow grower, it may reach six or seven feet in 10 years. Find ‘Chief Joe’ in the Coenosium Rock Garden, on the Arb’s west edge, at the entry above the stream.
