Thujopsis dolobrata

The Hiba Cedar, Thujopsis dolobrata, is a slow-growing conifer in the cypress family, and the Arb's specimen is at least 30 years old. Lift the foliage to see remarkable bright white, concave stomata underneath. This tree’s scale-like leaves appear reptilian, covering the entire branch, and it displays understated variegation throughout.
Like Thuja plicata, Western Red Cedar, its wood is durable and scented. In its native Japan, ‘asunaro’ is valued in temples and gardens, and it has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
