Summer lights

The Arboretum’s interns and volunteers just readied the Arb for an evening wedding, the topper to a productive summer. The large Sensory Garden pond was filled, perhaps for the last time, so that guests could float good wishes on its surface.

From June to Labor Day, the Arb benefited from the work of CoHort volunteers and Arboretum interns. Uber-volunteers Cheryl Uyeji and Carol O'Rourke work every week in the Arb; many times it’s a day of planting or pulling weeds. Currently they also mow the lawns and manage the riot of dahlias blooming in the Entry Garden.

Seven interns served the Arb: Emily Allsop tended the young Tropical Garden, a collection of high-desert plants. Caitlin Hopkins worked as a liaison between the Arb and the LHO nursery / greenhouse, selecting natives and varieties to plant in shaded areas.

Bridget Kelsh assessed the gardens’ needs, managed both intern and volunteer assignments, took them through equipment instruction and pitched in every work day.

Samuel McDonald and Justina Miller concentrated on the rapidly maturing Acer Garden, weeding, clearing paths and sprucing it up. Samuel also refinished many of the large rustic signs that mark legacy gardens throughout the Arboretum.

Terre Shattuck created an an Arb identity package for future marketing, and Hamish Todd tended the Sequoia Grove, weeding, mulching and planting among the Arb’s big trees.

Fall quarter begins September 24th, and the Arb will dress up again, turning on its fall colors.
